Profile

PJ is a 24-year-old Australian man who is non-verbal. He is able to make a limited number of requests, take part in familiar scripted conversations, make choices when given options, and respond to yes/no questions.

Preferences

PJ enjoys music and sometimes even dancing! He especially likes using his iPad to play short clips of music on repeat. He also loves food, going for walks, and spending time outdoors. When he has the chance, PJ enjoys watching movies, his favourites include Harry Potter, Shrek, and Zathura.

He finds loud, busy environments, like large shopping centres overwhelming. PJ can also struggle when several people are talking at once or when he feels rushed or under pressure.

Living goals

PJ strives to live life as happily and independently as possible, with the help of his care team and family. He would like to be able to engage with the community by going to local cafes, bistros and walking around his own environment. PJ is keen to be involved in food preparation and hopes this is something that can be a shared task with his new housemate.

Flatmate preferences

PJ is open to sharing with either a male or female housemate, ideally someone around his age, although this isn’t a strict requirement. Occasionally, PJ may become dysregulated and make some noises. These episodes are usually short-lived, so it’s important that his new housemate feels comfortable with this.

Home living environment

Activities

Support staff actively promote PJ’s engagement by assisting with all aspects of daily living. Activities include sensory time, meditation, listening to music, watching video clips or movies, and other calming or stimulating experiences based on PJ’s preferences.

PJ enjoys spending time outdoors and regularly goes on long walks, supported by his team. He also maintains strong connections with his family and spends time with them throughout the week.

Skills development

Skill development is encouraged through meaningful participation in daily tasks such as meal preparation. PJ is supported to assist with chopping vegetables and is offered opportunities to smell and taste raw ingredients, helping him connect with the activity in a sensory way. Staff focus on gently encouraging PJ to take part in tasks at his own pace and comfort level.

Household routine

PJ is typically an early riser, waking between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. His morning begins with breakfast, followed by a sensory hour that may include aromatherapy, soft music, massage, and the use of various sensory items to help him feel calm and ready for the day.

Although PJ does not currently attend a day program, he spends much of his day out in the community. Most mornings include a long walk, after which he returns home for lunch. In the afternoon, he often heads back out, sometimes visiting a local café.

In the evening, PJ has a bath as part of his wind-down routine. Afterward, he may choose to spend time on his iPad or watch TV, depending on what he feels like doing.
